# Keeping Secrets in the Dark

by Tara Grace

## Script

She was the last to know. It arrives with a small wince of pity — and underneath the pity, a judgement. That she was slow, or willing, or simply too close to see. But ask her later, when it's safe to ask, and she will tell you she knew. Years ago. A particular Tuesday, something on the stove. She will say, I knew then. What she had was not information. It was the sense that the man across the table had gone very slightly out of register with himself. That something had moved in behind his eyes and was answering for him, competently, in his voice, using his words. She had no sentence for that. You cannot telephone your sister and say the register is wrong. So the knowing sat in her without edges. And knowledge without edges does not count. We credit only what has a shape — a bottle behind the paint tins, a car stopped at an angle that makes no sense. The crisp thing is admissible. The vague thing, however early and however accurate, is not evidence. And a woman with only a feeling learns very quickly that she is the unreliable one in the room. This is where The Star belongs — and it is not the card of hope. It comes after the collapse and depicts no repair at all. A figure kneels at a pool with a vessel in each hand. She pours one out. She pours the other back into the water it came from. She was not the last to know. She was the first, by years. She was the last to be believed — and the last of all to believe herself.
