# Mistranslated Words That Change Everything

by Tara Grace

## Script

here is a Greek word standing at the front door of the Gospels. And for two thousand years, the English-speaking world has been handed the wrong key for it. The word is metanoia. In almost every English Bible, it arrives as: repent. But repentance is sorrow. It faces backward. It asks you to be accurately sad about something you have already done. Metanoia is not sorrow. Meta — change. Nous — mind. Not heart. Mind. The whole apparatus by which you take in a situation and decide what it is. So the instruction at the door was never kneel and weep. It was: think again. Come back to your mind, and walk through. Jerome made it "do penance." Luther built the sentence that split the Church on top of that older, more governable word. And a whole civilization organized its spiritual vocabulary around feeling bad — on schedule. The essay is called "The Word They Translated Wrong." Come and read it.
